Chimney crowns are a maintenance item that most homeowners don’t think about! It is a classic out-of-site-out-of-mind situation.
While unseen, a masonry chimney relies on the crown as a ‘roof’ to protect the masonry below from accelerated weathering and water damage.
The ‘crown’ of a chimney is the very top of the masonry portion of a chimney. It is the cap or roof of a masonry chimney and is usually made of concrete that is pitched to shed water off of the chimney. It is important that the crown is inspected and is in good working condition. Ideally, the crown should be inspected annually for any cracks or damage. Damage to chimney crowns can be caused by storm debris or even hail.
If a chimney crown is not maintained, the masonry chimney below will suffer from accelerated water and freeze-thaw damage.
Our masonry restoration and repair crews at Alliance Restoration regularly repair and replace masonry chimney crowns. Sealing of minor cracks and defects can be accomplished very easily and inexpensively. Even if a crown requires full replacement, it is a very minor item compared to the cost of damage to a masonry chimney caused by its neglect. It pays to remember the maintenance stuff you can’t see!
