Chimney Repair and Rebuilding

Brick and stone chimneys usually face more weathering near their tops. While we can rebuild your chimney from the ground-up, most of the time, all that is needed to get the brick or stonework on a chimney back in great shape, is individual-unit replacement or the rebuilding of the upper portion of the masonry.

The more minor repair, – individual unit replacement, involves removing any deteriorated stones or bricks from the chimney by sawing and chiseling them out. We then use a closely matched replacement stone or brick to replace as needed. Usually when bricks or stones have been damaged to the point where they require replacement, the deterioration has spread to the surrounding mortar. In this case, we will have to replace some mortar as well.

The larger repair – but still much more manageable than a chimney rebuild, – is a partial rebuild, or the rebuild of the top of the chimney. We will recommend this course of action if there are too many damaged bricks or stones, or the mortar is in such poor condition that the masonry is unstable. For a partial rebuild, we will remove and either salvage the original masonry (if only the mortar was deteriorated) or select the closest match from our suppliers and rebuild the chimney. Many times, we only will need to rebuild a couple of feet to provide a lasting repair.
