Mortar Replacement Services – Tuckpointing & Repointing

Our masonry restoration crews can restore mortar that is weathered or missing to it’s original condition. Most masonry mortars have an expected service life of roughly 40 years on vertical surfaces and 20 years at horizontal surfaces and exterior features that are fully exposed to the elements (such as monuments, outdoor features, and chimneys).

We have the capability and regularly match both historic and modern mortars in-house for our clients. It is important to match mortar closely in order to accomplish a repair that fits into the surrounding masonry. Replacement mortar that is tuckpointed or repointed into an existing structure will stand out and create a true eyesore. We take pride in making sure that our repairs blend and enhance the buildings and structures that we help maintain.

Lime based mortars are a specialty that is required for repairing old buildings that don’t have movement joints in the masonry, but rather, rely on soft mortar to shift and cushion the masonry units during times of thermal expansion and contraction. Lime mortar also plays a role in buildings with stone foundations and softer mortar. The lime mortar that we use on these structures, works with the surrounding materials and does not create surface shearing and breakage of masonry units when the masonry undergoes normal seasonal stresses.
