Tuckpointing: Historic Lime Mortar

Matching your masonry structure’s original mortar strength, permeability, and color, often comes down to using authentic techniques. We’ll often create true lime mortars from scratch to make sure that the repair or restoration work matches accurately.

When used with modern and higher strength masonry, portland cement mortars can be a long lasting and suitable material however, older structures often use soft brick and stone. The combination of the soft masonry and much harder modern cements cause accelerated deterioration and breakage during thermal movement and freeze thaw cycles in winter. This is when we rely on older lime mortar formulations to make sure that we do our best to preserve the masonry.

Lime mortars require special preparation and treatment in order to cure properly. Portland cement based mortar is commonly used in modern masonry construction and many masons are not familiar with the methods required for successful restoration and tuckpointing to older structures.
